Getting Started: Requirements & Preparation

To ensure the highest accuracy for your safety plans, please review these requirements before you begin
 

​Device Compatibility

• Required Hardware: iPhone Pro or iPad Pro (equipped with LiDAR).

• Optimization: For the best experience, we recommend scanning with your iPhone Pro and using aniPad (with Apple Pencil) for the markup phase. Or importing the .evacplan file to MacOS, just install the iPad version from the Mac App Store.

Space & Environment Prep

LiDAR works best in organized, well-lit environments.

• Light it up: Ensure all lights are on. Dark corners can cause scanning errors.

• Clear the path: Clear clutter from corners and wall edges. The sensor needs to "see" where the floor meets the wall.

• Open doors: Any room you wish to include must have the door propped open before you start.

• Tidy up: Straighten furniture. Large, avoid crooked objects 

• Indoor only: This tool is designed for interior spaces. Scanning outdoors is not supported.

Step 1: The Scan

One floor, one pass.

Our scanning engine is powered by Apple’s RoomPlan API. Because the scan must be completed in a single continuous session, follow these techniques for best results:

• Start scanning in the largest open area first.

• The "Corners First" Method: In each room, scan the edges where the walls meet the floor and ceiling first.

• Slow & Steady: Move the camera slowly. Watch the 3D model build at the bottom of your screen to ensure no gaps are left behind.

• Point of View: Stand as far back as possible to give the sensor a wide field of view. When moving through doorways, turn around to capture both sides of the frame.

• Mirrors & Glass: Mirrors could confuse LiDAR. If possible, scan the floor and ceiling around them.. For sliding glass doors, try closing the curtains or leaving one side open to help the sensor distinguish the threshold.

Pro Tip: If a scan looks crooked or "drifted," it’s best to reset and restart from a different corner of the room. Remember, always start in the largest area first.

Step 2: The Editor

Once your floor plan is rendered, it’s time to turn it into a life-saving document. Don't forget, you can share the .evacplan file to an iPad or MacOS to complete it.

A. Labeling & Text

• Use the Text Tool to name every room (Kitchen, Bedroom 1, etc.).

• Add a "Muster Point" description or specific emergency instructions in the margins; the template will automatically scale to fit your notes.

B. Safety Icons

• Drag and drop icons for fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and exits.

• Smart Legend: Only the icons you actually place on the map will appear in your printed legend, keeping your plan clean and relevant.

• Note: Always check your local municipal codes to ensure you are marking all mandatory safety equipment.

C. Evacuation Routes

• Drawing Paths: Use the line tool to draw paths to main and secondary exits.

• Precision: On iPhone, straight lines work best. On iPad, use an Apple Pencil for curved, natural-looking paths.

• Pro Workflow: Sync your .evacplan projects to a Mac to handle complex markups with a mouse and keyboard

Step 3: Customization & Branding

Make the plan official by filling out the Template Info section.

• Unlock white labeling to add your own brand

• Company Branding: Upload yours or your clients logo (ideal for property managers, co-hosts, or safety firms).

• Emergency Contacts: Input local emergency numbers and the full street address/unit number.

• The Elevator Rule: Check the "No Elevator" box to automatically add a safety warning to the plan. Only use this if an elevator is present in the building.

Step 4: Preview & Export

• Review: Use the Eye Icon to preview exactly how the printed A4 sheet will look.

• Mirroring: Designing a duplex? Use the Mirror Tool to instantly flip the layout for identical adjoining units.

• Credits: One export credit is used per floor plan. You can top up your credits directly in the app.

• External Edits: If the scan has a minor structural error, export the PDF and open it in a tool like Affinity or Canva for final touch-ups.
